Tepani’s Heartwork: A Clown Methodology for Connection, Grief, and Honest Expression

Tepani’s Heartwork is a clown methodology created by Stephanie Bell, a Dallas-based performer, educator, and one of the founders of the growing DFW clown community. Rooted in emotional honesty, audience trust, and embodied play, this approach moves beyond traditional clowning techniques to create work that is deeply human, relational, and transformative.

As her clown persona, Tepani, Stephanie leads with curiosity, vulnerability, and permission, inviting both performers and audiences into spaces where joy, grief, absurdity, and tenderness can coexist. Rather than chasing jokes or spectacle, Tepani’s Heartwork centers on authentic presence, encouraging clowns to listen, respond, and build genuine connections in real time.

This methodology is grounded in clear structure and safety. Performers are guided to develop a strong relationship with the audience, maintain awareness of consent and emotional boundaries, and create work that feels inclusive, intentional, and alive. Through a combination of solo work, ensemble exploration, and responsive coaching, students learn how to trust themselves, take creative risks, and support one another on stage.

Tepani’s Heartwork is used in clown workshops, performances, and interdisciplinary spaces across Dallas–Fort Worth and beyond, including grief work, end-of-life education, and community-based programming. It is especially effective for artists, caregivers, educators, and anyone seeking a more honest, embodied way to express themselves.

Whether in a theater, classroom, or community space, Tepani’s Heartwork invites people to slow down, feel more deeply, and remember that connection, not perfection, is the point.
